As one of the great Yogi Berra quotes states: "Baseball is 90 percent mental and the other half is physical." That quote, well at least the premise of it, could not be any more true.
During my peak race of the year, the Leadville Trail 100 MTB, I found myself kicking in to plan B of the day. Everything leading up to it could not have been smoother. It was bring on the day, because I am going to hit my goal. Then, on the second climb of the day, I had to tell myself that my primary goal of the event was not going to happen, 15 miles in, just over 85 to go. Time to focus on Plan B. I was told to "Start Strong-Finish Stronger." That statement was repeated over again and again, and I found myself able to push harder on the flat portions of the race stronger than I thought I could. Even with the painful climbs, I was still able to finish just under the 9 hour mark. It was not only the physical training, but being able to mentally "Dig Deep" that was a key component of my training that helped me finish the day, and make the Leadville Trail 100 a success! Thank you Julie. Hope to see you out there, Michael Williams
